Coming soon: Porsche Panamera Diesel
Hello, forum.
Just came across this article saying that Porsche CEO Matthias Müller has confirmed the production of the Panamera's diesel variant, with a H2 2011 release date.
No details on the engine as yet, but the article hints that the Panamera will receive the same engine found in the Cayenne Diesel [which itself is a rebadged VW unit; 240 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque between 2000-2250 rpm]. Estimated 0-100 km/h time is slightly over 7.0 seconds.
In other news, it seems that the company has taken a liking to the Cajun name for the Cayenne's rumored little brother and is exploring legal possibilities to secure the name. Uh oh. Porsche Cajun? Really?
Thoughts?

While he declined to specify what engine would be used, there is little doubt it will be the 3.0-liter TDI with 176 kW (240 PS / 236 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. It will be mounted to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which should allow the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a little over seven seconds.
Besides talking about the Panamera, Müller stated the company has grown fond of the Cajan name - for their entry-level crossover - and is exploring its legal availability.

Will be launched in the second half of 2011
Porsche CEO Matthias Müller has confirmed the company will launch a diesel-powered Panamera in the second half of 2011. Speaking with Germany's Westfalen-Blatt, Müller cited the success of the Cayenne diesel as one of the key reasons for launching the new Panamera variant. While he declined to specify what engine would be used, there is little doubt it will be the 3.0-liter TDI with 176 kW (240 PS / 236 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. Europeans have Diesel versions of about all the luxury sedans out on the market. Other than probably Bentleys and Rolls Royces.
So why not? I m all for it. I can bet you, that diesel model isnt coming to NA tho.

I have no doubt that the Panamera Diesel will be a success in Europe, given the popularity of the Cayenne Diesel in that market.
On another note, here's a question: why doesn't Porsche source a more powerful engine from within the Volkswagen Group, like one of the V8 diesels? The V6 in the Cayenne is without a doubt a very decent engine, but with Audi and VW offering higher-capacity powerhouses, surely it can't be difficult for Porsche to pull one of those engines, can it?

diesel is allready a sucess in european market.....the diesel versions are the most sold in any european country....one of the reasons is because the spent less fuel to run and diesel (in portugal) are aboute 1.09 € per liter....and simply gasoline 95 is 1.299€/liter and 98 is almost 1.60€liter....
here almost 70% of cars in the road are diesel and many tunner companys equip those cars to the max.....I know some cases of 1.9 TDI with 130hp stock tunned to 400+ hp...crasy...
that is one thing I dont like in the porsche.....why they dont put more hp on those engines....that is the same engine that equip a normal audi A6,A8, Q5 or Q7...

As with the V6 Panny/Cayenne models, I could almost care less in terms of my purchase plans (even though neither will prob make it to US anyway). What I do care about is: more profitability for Porsche = more models for Porsche Purists ala 918 Spyder, GT2RS, GT3RS, etc.
Every successful 'broad market' model Porsche launches just adds to the capital available for Porsche to build the cars we all love to see more of.
