Autocar reveals more details about upcoming Cayenne.

Updated: 2010 Cayenne details

This is the next-generation Porsche Cayenne, which the German car maker hopes will remain its best-selling and most profitable model when it goes on sale next year.

Porsche engineers are believed to have led the work on the new Cayenne, which is the sister vehicle to the VW Touareg and Audi Q7.

On the outside, Michael Mauer’s design team has given the Cayenne a much more curvaceous and fluid exterior, as well as trying to relate the big SUV to the 911’s classic design language.

Aside from the distinct ‘hip’ over the rear wheel, the car’s sides are heavily pinched inwards to try to reduce the car’s visual bulk. The remodelled front also gets a 911-shaped bonnet, which tapers to a narrow opening between the headlights.

These pictures show that the lozenge-shaped tail-lights wrap right around into the rear wings, again hinting at the 911.

Inside, the interior is all new and expected to be of much higher perceived quality. Sources say it will use some of the interior sub-assemblies used in the Panamera.

Under the skin, the biggest changes will be the reworked direct-injection V8 engines first seen in the Panamera.

The normally aspirated V8 will offer 395bhp and an expected 0-62mph time of around 5.0sec, while the turbocharged V8 will offer 493bhp and a 0-62mph time of around 4.3sec. The range-topping Turbo S will again offer 550bhp.

A hybrid Cayenne was signed off for production in early 2008 and it is expected to be unveiled at the launch of the new model.

The company says the car will use a “full parallel hybrid system”. The hybrid module, consisting of an additional clutch and electric motor, will be between the engine and transmission. The battery is stored under the boot floor.

Depending on driving conditions, the hybrid module can disengage either the engine or the electric motor, or combine both to act as “one joint power unit”.

Aside from the ability to run the car for a short distance in ‘zero emissions’ mode, Porsche is claiming fuel economy improvements of up to 30 per cent and impressive performance when the car is being driven by both the engine and electric motor.

so the new CS with 395hp will be as fast as my current CTT with 500hp. I wonder how they can do that? pdk probably account for about .2 to .3 seconds, must be significant weight reduction??

Rumors are that all Cayenne II models will be some 200-300 kilos lighter than current Cayennes. I think this is a key to acceleration improvement.

2011 Porsche Cayenne most revealing spy photos yet.

The Porsche 911 ultimately defined the Porsche look. But these days it seems the Panamera is the one taking this design language forward. Seen here are the latest and clearest spy pictures of the upcoming 2011 Cayenne yet.

The only parts that are fully covered are the front and rear ends but happily the protruding headlights are fully-Panamera compliant. The rear lights are new and so is the third window, taped up as it is. While the Cayenne is still an SUV it looks more compact now perhaps as a response to the general auto industry trend of sizing down.

Porsche has been testing the vehicle over many different parts and surfaces, even going as far as putting it on the Nürburgring. After all, it still is a Porsche and as such is expected to handle a certain way. Plans are to make it lighter and more fuel efficient. The current model features a turbo diesel motor as one of its engines so that idea should carry into the next model. A Cayenne hybrid version is in the cards too.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2010 with the first customer deliveries to take place later in the year. A production version is sure to be exhibited during one of the major international shows, including Los Angeles.

Well rumours about the Panamera performance, which by the way I will not believe until experienced anyway, is that the 0-60 numbers are achieved with launch control, so have nothing to do with real world accelaration. I mean who sits at every red light and revs to 5000 and releases the brakes? I would expect that normal of the line acceleration would be the same as is for the current model. PDK would be nice I guess, I am not a fan of tiptronic. Should definitely improve gas mileage just because of the extra gears, no?
