The best entry Porsche?

I have been doing some research on a few vehicles to purchase, I was considered a few of the imports (STi, S2000 etc)... But then I started looking at Audi S4's and it lead me to maybe an older Carrera S or Cayman?

I'm just looking for something that I could throw some racing seats in, drive it daily but have it handle like a monster.

My main concerns are the maintenance and cost of parts, anything I should be aware of before consider a Porsche?

Any help is appreciated!

Could somebody also change my name to "ThatPhotographer" please?

Thanks!

A 996 c2 / similar year Boxster would probably be the best bet. You could go aircooled... But you will have higher maintenance bills. I would suggest 996 for maintenance alone.

Former owner of a 91 C4, with a great relationship with my mechanic. You know, because I put his daughter thru two years of college.

Rule #1 about a porsche or audi or whatever car you chose to get, if you can't afford the repairs don't do it. Those are all different types of vehicles you described and nothing like the other.
Porsche- Great DD but not the same room or storage you may get from the audi or cayman. If price and maintenance are a factor I would go with cayman, if not I would go with Carrera S...just my .02

Yeah I was leaning towards a Cayman in the first place, it seems like the most logical car for me right now. Just trying to stay under $30k or so and something I can play with that's ready out of the box.

What's the power like on a Cayman? I would definitely do exhaust and some kind of suspension work.

I DD (actually, one and only car) a 1996 993 C2. I paid just under 30 for it. I had a PPI done, and the car was in relatively good shape; thus far I've done oil changes and a few other scheduled maintenance items. I would strongly suggest an air-cooled car over a 996 for economical Porsche enjoyment because they have more character, are more soulful, sound better, look better, etc. More tangibly, they hold their value much better, and the alleged more expensive maintenance is really inaccurate in my experience: 993 doesn't require valve adjustments like the 964 and earlier cars, oil change runs about $250, tires (MPSS) about $1400 mounted, balanced, etc. including alignment.

Happy to respond to any questions about 993 ownership (either in the thread or through a PM)

a cayman, or boxster, *on the street* is a lot more fun than a 911 - perfect pick for your needs. under-powered, perhaps, but so fun to sling around corners at non-death speeds.

AMGsound is an unknown quantity at this point
I got a base 08 Cayman early this summer and I love it. Lacks the craziness and soundtrack of my gone C63, but so much more fun to DRIVE....and so cheaper to maintain and run in general.
1st P car for me and im somewhat bitten by the brand....fortunatly or unfortunatly.....
