Paint to Sample Boxster Spyder...1 of 4 in US...

History: PCNA last Spring offered a one week window to order PTS on Spyder. It did so without much notice. In fact, they were denying they would allow PTS until the 'ultimo momento'. That window closed on March 25th. To my knowledge, only one end-user Spyder customer in the US was able to get his PTS color choice approved. I know of several that tried - but their choices (e.g. Suzuka Grey, Dolphin Grey, RS Orange) were turned down by PAG. The lucky guy was Steve in Texas who was allowed a 'Speed Yellow' Spyder at an extra cost of $5500. His will be arriving at his dealer next week. Two others were ordered on spec by dealers with a history of 911 PTS special orders - a 'Riviera Blue' at Walters and this 'Azure Blue' at Euroclassics. Both of these PTS Spyders seem to have been locked up in the past few days by forum members from California. The final PTS Spyder was the Meteor Gray built for the Detroit Auto Show in January. This is still in the PCNA pool of cars and has been used extensively for 'autocross rides' at the recent Porsche World Roadshow. I personally drove it in South San Francisco at the stadium venue. It is scheduled to be auctioned off to P dealers soon and is showing signs of 'wear'. Not a good use, in my opinion, for a rare PTS Spyder.
I missed the PTS deadline in March. So in June I had to order from one of only seven colors allowed for the remaining '12 Spyder allocations. I chose 'Aqua Blue Metallic'. However, I decided to spice things up with a full leather Carrera Red interior. I will post photos of my car when it arrives (expected at my dealer in a few weeks - it was put on vessel by PAG on Aug. 4th). By the way, I once had an Azure colored Porsche. It was a 1954 356 Pre-A Cabriolet with red leather interior - much like this Spyder!
Back to these PTS cars. The Meteor Gray from the Detroit Auto Show will have the earliest Vin # since it was produced in late fall of 2010 for that January '11 event. The Riviera at Walters has Vin #...5178. The Azure has Vin #...5179. My Aqua Blue/Carrera Red 'custom order interior' has Vin #...5187. Steve's Speed Yellow has Vin #...5189. All must have been produced fairly closed together at the end of the Spyder 'run'. Oh yes, Spyder production is 'finito'. These were among the last Spyders built at Zuffenhausen before production was stopped in late July. So these are the last of Spyders, period! 'Speed Yellow' Steve talked to PCNA folks at the Parade in Georgia last week and was told just a few more Vin #'s after his (#5189) were made before closing down the Spyder 'line' - but not many (10 or 15 at the most and probably going to other world markets!).
I have also been told by a reliable source at Rennlist that only 125 Model Year 2012 Spyders were allocated to US dealers in total. We don't know exact '12 Spyder world-wide production yet - but they will not be many. This was a very much abbreviated production, lasting only about three months. It is a fraction of the MY2011 Spyders built. And both years totals for Spyders are less than .2 gt3 or .2 gt3 RS production for '10 and '11. So Spyders will do down as a very rare model compared to other production Porsches of their 'era'.
