Porsche cancels Boxster/Cayman production contract, Magna wants cash — Autoblog

Shortly after the Boxster debuted in 1996, Porsche contracted with Valmet Automotive of Finland as a second production source for the sports car, and a few years later, employed the facili along with the Cayman coupe. In 2008 Porsche decided that it would shift that production contract from Valmet to Magna International and its assembly plant in Graz Austria. Today, with Porsche being subsumed into the Volkswagen Group, the sports car maker has decided to cancel the Magna deal. With Volkswagen now buying up the remains of Karmann, the Boxster and Cayman are now expected be built at the coachbuilder's factory in Osnabrueck, Germany.

Magna claims it has already invested a significant amount of money on development to prepare for production. As a result Magna is seeking €400 million in compensation from Porsche. There's no word from Stuttgart on its plans to repay Magna, but with VW's legal arm exercised and ready to go, the battle is sure to be drawn out over the coming months and years.

ouch.... I'm sure Magna is PISSED!

I was under the impression that magna wanted or tried to buy Opel that would have pissed off VW to no end.

Well, yes. That was just adding fuel to the fire. Fact is; due to the economy there isn't a need for so much production. Thus why the Boxster is now built in Zuffenhausen.

And as far as Porsche hitting the 150k annual mark for total production, like the new CEO was quoted as saying.... he needs to put down the crack pipe. LOL

If the bet they made had panned out, and the economy stayed level I could see that number. Though I have a distinct feeling that they were counting on a sub boxster model to prop it up though.

I agree....

I just don't understand the Cayman.

If they eliminated the Cayman S, and just had it (in order of price- highest to lowest) they'd do well.

Boxster S
Boxster
Cayman- with a base price of 38900- you could get a nicely equipped Porsche for close to mid/low 40's. - Then their production numbers would increase.

But a 4 Cylinder Boxster(ish) car? Bad move IMHO>
