Question Anybody have any experience retrofitting a PCM/Nav unit?

I absolutely love the sound quality on my stereo system and I'd like to be able to add either Ipod or MP3-CD functionality.

Right now I'm using a RF transmitter plugged into the cigarette lighter to jack in my iphone. Needless to say it could use some serious improvement.

Has anyone fooled around with replacing the stereo system? Is this something that a shop would even mess with or something I need to install myself?

Your stereo doesn't play mp3 cds? Mine does. PCM or standard head unit?

Denison makes an ipod setup but it takes the place of the cd changer.

I have a standard head unit. Have Bose but no changer.

When I was about to buy a Cayman that was not fitted with it i asked both my Porsche dealer which is owned buy a family friend and a local ICE-shop. Got the same reply; buy one with the PCM factory fitted, it's to expensive. BUT it IS possible if you really want it.

Good luck Ironmako!

BTW isn't it possible to fit an AUX cable to the standard stereo? If so this is a sub 50 bucks job!

Yes, but I'm told it takes the place of the cd changer, so you lose that.

I don't have the CD changer so that would be a KILLER solution!

I've got to do some more digging...

Thanks for the info.

Thumbs up

There is a factory ipod/auxillary input kit available, it will fit the PCM or standard CD player.

Adding the PCM, or PCM with Nav is pretty easy. Not cheap, but a nice and clean upgrade. Be cautious of purchasing a used or take-off unit, some cars need specific units. If you need any help, let me know.
