Andy, I believe you are referring to ducted fans. Those are usually powered by a nitro burning engine. Scale turbines have become pretty popular recently. This SR-71 is powered by turbines.
Geez, it has been a few years since I looked into this.

That's really cool that they use scale turbines now.
