Its good to see that this plane is getting close to production. Its a great idea to use the same base platform as an ground attack/air superiority fighter for all branches theat field such aircraft. While the F/A-22 is indeed badass, the fact that three different versions can be made from the same platform of the F-35 is a no brainer to me.

^^^Read my post above, the F/A-35 is a replacement in the Marines for the Harrier and F/A-18, in the Navy for the F/A-18 as well, and in the Air Force for both the F-16 and F-15. The 35 is a plane that will be used by these three branches as well as for the UK and some European countries. Therefore, it will be cheaper to produce these similar airframes in various forms than many different fighters.
PS - I got most this info from the military channel so if some of the replacement issues are wrong, my bad.

I love it, looks cool. I would love to fly either the F22 or F35. However, from my understanding, the F/A18 Super Hornet is a superior fighter plane than the F35. I say this in Comparison to the F35 that the Navy will have that does not have vertical lift capabilities. I hear that the F/A18 out performs this plane, and that it was pushed through the defense department just to get the contract going.
What do you guys know about this?

I don't think that it has the speed or quite possibly the maneuverability of the updated F/A-18, which is a hell of a plane by the way. The strength of the F-35 will be in its stealth, advanced avionics and ability to be adaptable to the needs of various branches of the military. Despite the fact that the 35 will join the fleet, the 18 will remain in service for years to come as it is one of the best front line fighters out there. I think the job of the 35 will be more ground target specific while performing adequately as a air superiority fighter. One has to take into account that the demand for the best air-to-air combat fighter is not as important in the present era of warfare as it was when the F-15/16/18 were designed.
