To shoot flames the car must be tuned to run very rich.

I have always been taught that it is not a good thing.
yeah, I thought it was the unused fuel getting dumped and ignited or something along those lines? Pardon me if I'm completely wrong

Wow, lots of mis-information and partially good information in this thread.

Let's just get this out of the way. There are a few ways to shoot flames with your exhaust.

The dumb way is to buy one of those flame thrower kits. All that is a spark plug in your exhaust igniting unburnt fuel and the exhaust glow pushing it out.

Now to get the effect of what he wants, isn't very hard.

You don't need to run de-catted pipes or an exhaust. You just need to have your car running for a decent amount of time, and give it a couple quick blips of the throttle. With the heat in the exhaust and the unburnt fuel flowing, it has to go somewhere. And out the back of the tip it goes.

All of this depends on the car.

Like above, the Lamborghinis do it because of their short exhaust path.

The 599 GTO does it because of my stated method above.

But if you want the maximum effect of your car blowing flames, and know it can do it. Use the LABrit method. Climb to redline and just let out of the throttle. If your car can naturally shoot flames, it will do so the most after doing that.

And furthermore, please don't go out and do this every chance you get. You might have your stock Gallardo doing this but your buddy's won't be. It's all about the car.

The short exhaust path has little to no affect on this phenomenon. If that were the case, then nearly every Porsche 911 with an aftermarket exhaust should shoot flames, since their exhaust path is much shorter than that of a Gallardo or Ferrari.

It's almost all in the tuning. When you're at high RPM, the engine is sucking in a lot of air and the computer is dumping fuel in to compensate. When you lift off the throttle, the air supply is reduced, but for that moment before the computer can dial back the injectors, it's dumping a lot of fuel with no air to combust with, so it passes right through and into the exhaust. Some cars are tuned to run more aggressively, i.e. you'll see less flames, as the mixture is too lean, and some more conservatively, flames, black smoke out the tailpipes and soot all over the back of the car. You'll see this a lot on turbocharged cars because it's safer to run it real fat when it's on boost at high RPM, since one ping can blow the motor up. So if you run the RPMs in the mid range causing the manifold to get hot enough to ignite this unburnt fuel and then stab the throttle, you might get flames.
