Riding along with a Lamborghini Super Trofeo driver and Squadra Corse instructor in an Aventador LP700-4 as lead car at Lamborghini Esperienza Sepang.
Another of the biggest highlights of my year. Having gone to Sepang with the sole intention of capturing the Sesto Elemento earlier this year during the Super Trofeo Asia season opener, who was I to say no to such an opportunity as this? This experience proved something I'd suspected all along: that despite the many poser accusations leveled at it, the Aventador really is an incredibly capable performance machine and drivers' supercar at its core. The handling precision, grip, and response to steering inputs exhibited by it were impressive to say the least.
One memory stands out for me over the rest of this very fast ride, over even the Aventador's incredible stability and traction when tackling Sepang's Turn 5 at somewhere over 240Km/h before diving down into the braking zone for Turn 6.. We were playing lead car for a pair of prospective customers new to the Lamborghini brand in their own Aventadors provided by the factory. On the middle one of 3 laps, there was a scheduled standing start and full acceleration run down Sepang's main straight to see just what this Raging Bull could do when fully unleashed. So as we rounded the final corner, we continued slowing before coming to a complete stop on the starting line marked by cones, with our proteges behind us armed and ready to fire like bullets in a gun's magazine.
After running the prospects through the Aventador's launch control procedure in detail, our chief Matador proceeded to activate our own launch control, in Corsa Mode and with ESC off. 'Thrust mode possible' flashed up on the instrument cluster, and he held the brakes fully engaged while bringing the revs up to 5000RPM.. Before quickly sidestepping off the brakes and burying the throttle to the floor. And BANG... We were gone like a .50 caliber round fired out of a Barrett M82 sniper rifle. As the Aventador charged down the straight piling on speed, 700PS V12 screaming gloriously with every trip round the rev range, the G force pressed us back into our seats and squished my internal organs. Although not as brutal as some have reported, each Corsa upshift still sent a minor shockwave through the car and into our senses, a clear reminder of the immense forces we were unleashing. We hit what felt like over 290Km/h, before hitting the brakes and slowing down before the entry into Turn 1 in order to wait for the following drivers to complete their Thrust mode runs, and then carrying on with the rest of that Esperienza session.
During our short wait, I simply turned to the instructor, gave him a thumbs up and a wide grin, and told him, "That was an awesome run mate!" And he smiled right back.
And that is why nobody does passionate speed like the Italians.
