3,400 miles in 8 days
I am happy to report that my Superleggera has held up really well
during a 3,400-mile 8-day road trip from the Bay Area to Moab UT
through AZ on the way out and NV on the way back.
No tickets. Two CEL codes (P0105 on 1-5 and 6-10 -- the car noted
the low barometric pressure when I turned it on at 9,600 ft, after a
brief stop at the pass on Boulder Mountain -- no problem at 10,420
ft on Brian Head two days later :-). And eight loose screws, on the
two air intake top covers (slightly insufficient torque after the last
time they had come off at the shop, coupled with two days of extra
rough pavement in the Four Corners area -- no big deal).
The all-around protective clear bra installed just before the trip was
absolutely worth it. No paint chips. No rolling bushes hit. Just a bird
strike at 50 mph (bird got sucked under front bumper, hit the road,
and then hit the front scrape guard, resulting in a puff of feathers).
Withstood rain, sleet, one inch of ice on the front and mirrors, and
plenty of dust (car went from black to yellow to white to orange to
red to gray to camo black-and-yellow due to a layer of bugs).
The car turned out to be *way* more comfortable than I expected.
Drove 10 hours total on the first and last day, respectively. Drove
a 325-mile leg without stepping out. Got 20.6 mpg at 75 mph. And
up to almost 23 mpg at slightly lower speeds. Drove tons and tons
of twisty mountain roads, to bring that back well below 20. In fact,
drove Boulder to Escalante on Hwy 12 back and forth... five times,
for a little over three hours. (I theorized a while back that one can
do 500 miles on one tank. Turns out I was right. :-)
Met a film crew in Goblin Valley State Park. Stayed after they left,
to watch the Milky Way. Yes, stars rising at the horizon! I saw that
only once before, when I visited the Maldives.
And yes, met a lot of friendly & good people. I hope all your photos
turned out as well as mine. Oh, and yeah, I took hours and hours of
1080p video with the ContourHD cam mounted in the car. Have not
had a chance yet to review all of that footage though.
Anyway.
In short, my trip to celebrate Ferruccio's 94th birthday was a success.
PS: Let me know if you have questions.

> Great to see you treating her properly!
Yep, definitely not a garage queen. :-)
> Love the 2nd last pic.
It's UT-148, the N entrance to Cedar Breaks NM.
Won't open until July, due to the snow.
I have been there before though. Once in mid October, on the last
day they were open. And twice in December, after walking on that
snow for about two hours. Their visitor center was buried on those
two trips. (Disclaimer: at 10,000+ ft this is a dangerous hike.)

You have a spine of steel, my back always kills me after 3 hours of consecutive driving in the Superleggera. Or your roads are super smooth
Great set of photos, props to you for having the lunacy of driving that far. I'm not really a big long distance driver.
