I wish the lunacy was limited to the UAE but thats not the case but the UAE definitely is up there in terms of: "more money than sense" category

No, here in Oman till last year, number plates reached 400,000 OMR! Now adays, the number 1 goes for anything between 100,000 OMR to 250,000 OMR
