Lewis Hamilton Mercedes auction

If i was a fan I'd consider it...

Lewis Hamilton's hoon car set to get premium price - all in the name of charity.

Hoon legislation looks set to deliver an unexpected bonus to an Australian charity with the car Lewis Hamilton was caught doing a burnout in likely to sell for more than its new price.

Mercedes-Benz plans to donate the difference between the car’s market value and what it actually sells for to charity in an effort to counter suggestions it will profit from what authorities classify as “hooning”.

The car was collected from a police impound lot on Monday having been impounded on Friday night when the 2008 formula one world champion was caught doing a burnout in St Kilda.

Hamilton was fined on summons a maximum of $584.10 while his McLaren team paid to get the car out of the police impound.

An internal auction between Mercedes dealers is due to finish at midday today, with insiders tipping the V8-powered C63 AMG sedan will command substantially more than its $148,900 (plus on-road costs) list price, despite having been driven and likely having a little less rubber on its rear tyres.

“We have no intention of profiting from this,” said Mercedes-Benz Australia senior manager of communications David McCarthy. “The amount that is achieved over the vehicle’s normal value will be donated to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, a charity we’ve supported in the past.”

It’s understood Mercedes dealers have been fielding calls from interested buyers looking to own a car with some history.

“Vehicles with celebrity owners and drivers have always attracted a premium,” said McCarthy. “For whatever reason this vehicle has notoriety.”

Victoria Police deny the increased value of the car has been helped by its international publicity.

“The fact [Lewis Hamilton] was driving that car then of course the value would go up,” said a Victoria Police spokeswoman. “I don’t think it has anything to do with the notoriety [of that particular vehicle].”

The vehicle will also be sold with a “special item” designed to “add to its provenance”, although Mercedes isn’t saying what it is.
