Mercedes Benz Ceramics are no joke. Do yourself a favor, ask the dealer how much it they charge for an SLR brake job. Brakes on the SLR last no where near as long as MB says they should, and although these are the next evolution of CCBs for MB, I am sure they are still costly. Here is a hint, SLR CCB rotors are about 15K each, pads are about 1500.

So there is going to come an SLS to Belgium, AND we are going to see it on track?
Great!

C'mon thats the point of what he stated earlier-

But seriously, who really keeps a car like this to the point it needs a brake job. This is the SLS, not a E class.

As previously stated, ASK the people who have owned Porsche and Ferrari and compare them against your buying habits. You won't need to replace the rotors under 100k even if you do a couple track days.

A friend who tracked his SLR very frequently had to have his replaced at ~8k miles.

Porsche and Ferrari systems are much more reasonably priced.

Also, the SLS will end up being like the Z8. So I assume many will end up keeping them to the point where they need a brake job.

I can't imagine ordering it without the ceramics.

If you can afford the car, you should be able to afford the service.

This is not a new issue. Many Ferrari owners tried to spec their 360CS without ceramics to save on the service costs.

It's something I never understood.

They also tell you that the brakes will squeal during normal driving. I can't imagine pulling up to a light and my brakes squeal. So, I'm really on the fence about the brakes, but at this point I think I'll skip the brake upgrade.
Sounds like your dealer, as most is clueless. The numbers that they were quoting you sound like they are from the SLR. The Ceramics on the SLS are a completely different system and no service information has been released on them yet.

Had a chance to drive the SLS at Laguna Seca last year as a part of the AMG Driving Academy. I never heard a single sound and I spoke to a couple of engineers regarding the system. They were running the hell out of the cars for almost a month. Up to that point they had changed pads but not a single set of rotors. All of the cars they were tracking had the ceramics.

I am sure that rotor replacement costs are going to be high if you need them but my guess is that it will be more like Porsche than Ferrari.

I know a bunch of SLR owners as well that have had huge brake issues when tracking their cars. For some reason the SLR system was just not up to tracking.

Also, every owner that I know that did not bed in the brakes had huge squeeeeeeling problems.

That's why MB changed the brakes on the 722 GT. They aren't even carbon ceramic. The CCB on the regular SLR aren't made for the track.

As Dana stated, SLR's were NOT meant to be tracked. The CCB weren't up to specs IMHO.

-and if people end up keeping their SLS's; I'd consider a brake job a badge of honor!

Much like when I see people keep AND drive their Ferrari's and Carrera GT's! It means you are DEFINITELY a car enthusiast!

With a car like this; when in doubt- GET the Carbon Ceramics.
