Post Mercedes AMG Dropping 6.2-liter V8 for Bi-Turbo 5.5-Liter V8 - report

Mercedes-Benz is plotting to replace the naturally aspirated 6.3-liter (6208cc) AMG V8 with a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine by 2011. The move was confirmed in an Inside Line interview with Daimler R&D board member Dr. Thomas Weber.

Weber says the new engine could appear on cars in the fourth quarter of 2010 following an official reveal at September's Paris Motor Show. The currently-used V8 puts out between 450- and 520-horsepower, producing up to 440 ft-lb of torque for some models, and around 465 ft-lb for others. Fuel economy is rated around 12 mpg city, 16-19mpg highway.

With the new engine, Mercedes could be looking to up these economy figures, while reducing emissions. Simultaneously, the German automaker will not be looking to sacrifice performance, as that could damage AMG sales.

Aside from confirming the new engine, Dr. Weber also says that every customer purchasing a 2011 Mercedes-Benz unit with a V8 will get a turbocharged variant.

Is there anything better than a large displacement, forced induction engine straight from the factory? Satisfied with the performance? Great. If not, there are a few dozen companies that will tweak a few things and give you another 150HP/TQ.

Thus far, the the performance divisions of the European car companies are coping with the emission standard trends pretty well . . .

yes,but in a good way
The Turbo engines now are very responsive to throttle inputs and show little, almost not noticeable, turbo lag and save weight + improve the mpg and emissions figures.

So to me this is a good thing...it`ll be easy to tune and still shows some characteristics of an NA car

i still prefer NA cars since the engines require less maintenance and provides great longevity.

Never really liked the 6.3 engine. It neither has the punch of the 55K nor the high revving characteristics of the S85 for example.

Feels more like MB too if it's a turbo or compressor. High revving engines doesn't quite fit in my view of fast Benzes.
