Low mileage E55 is always a good choice. Are E63s in the mid 50s already?

I don't watch AMG prices like a hawk, so I would add the proviso of price being appropriate, but I would go for either E-class.

It seems like they are plenty big enough to haul a family of 4 and all of the associated detritus, give very impressive acceleration, and probably out handle the S class cars. Also, I think that a V12 is sort of overkill in all but an Aston Martin or Ferrari Grand Tourer or a supercar.

As for the choice between the two, it comes down to a tradeoff between NA and FI, age (of course), individual features (if you have any dealbreaker preferences), etc.

EDIT: Or a BMW M5?

M5 or AMG E-Class. Can't go wrong for either, just depends on your driving style.

E63, absolutely great cars and if they're really in the $50K range then I wouldn't hesitate.

E55 vs E63 - One of my best friends has had both. The "push in the back" from the Kompressor engine in the E55 makes it much more fun to drive, and that is only in stock form.....it can be easily made to be much faster and more powerful.

The E63 has an amazing motor, but getting more out of it requires much more $$$$.

Very true; I'm not an AMG spotter so I couldn't tell the difference without seeing the badges and I probably wouldn't pick either over an M5 anyway... But if I did pick up a hotrod, it would be the older, cheaper more "moddable" E55.
