Post REPORT: Mercedes says it has no plans for new CLK63 AMG

In a move sure to make shoulders slump and people ask "Why is this happening?", Mercedes will not produce a CLK63 AMG -- which would actually be an E Class Coupe AMG. The axing is due to the CLK moving from the C Class platform to the E Class, and Mercedes' view that a hotted up E Coupe with the 6.3-liter would be too close to the CLS 63 AMG "both in positioning and price."

A similarity in price is easy to digest, but the overlap in positioning sounds more like Mercedes is afraid sales of the E-Class Coupe AMG would cannibalize sales of the CLS63 AMG. Even if that's the case, it's a shame that Mercedes won't even consider a limited run, since such a car would be sure to sell just as well, if not better than the E63 AMG Wagon. The decision also vaporizes an E Coupe AMG Black series, and that would have been something special.

I don't think the CLK AMG has really been a hot seller for them anyway. Excluding the Black Series of course.

I don't think they made their CLK Black Series numbers in Europe. I've heard that 360 to 370 went to the US and the balance of just under 200 went to the ROW.
I'm not stating definitive facts here, but I have a high degree of comfort on the US number, not as much on the ROW.

Maybe this will firm up Black Series values as it appears they are the last of the CLKS to be made.

Wasn't the total run 500 with 350 coming to the US?

What I've read is that 367 came to the US.
The balance is not reported other than hearsay, at least that's all I can find.

I only ever see women driving cab versions of the CLK63, so I don't really think that justifies continues production. I just hope the BS stays around because that is a very fun car if you're into oversteer lunacy.

You mean doing donuts in parking lots?

It's actually a pretty well sorted track car.

It is a great track car and the oversteer is more than controllable when you start pushing the car.

Quite a bit of weight, though - not all that much better than a well-sorted C63.
