Free Mac antivirus software

How long has it been since the drive was formatted? How much RAM is installed? Do you have an SSD or an HDD? Assuming you've updated the software to current specs (depending on your OS), you should be fine. I'd double-check that you've applied the recent Java update to eliminate the newest security threat first, and go from there.
As for antivirus software, I'd stay away from it. Apple does an overall excellent job handling the security of their software, so just keep up to date on their releases & you'll be fine.

My laptop has never been formatted and I've had it for 4 years, cant remember the exact spec of the machine, is there anyway I can find out within MAC? and its regularly updated. I didn't download any antivirus software and don't think Im going to. Right now I just want to try to get rid of excess fat and maybe try to format it?
4 years? Wow. I reinstalled my OS after about a year of building up files & programs, and noticed a pretty decent change in performance afterwards. Of course I saved the vital files & programs that I wanted to keep beforehand to an external HD.

I wouldn't say they are virus proof. check this article from Forbes.com

I use ClamXav for virus scanning.

Mac has come out with a few security patches in the last few days to combat this so make sure you have your latest updates installed ASAP.

No computer is truly virus-proof. However, the stock OS X software (with current updates) is typically enough for 99% of users that have a clue about what they're doing on the internet (whereas that's not the case with a stock PC).

Important things to check in regards to speed (in no particular order):
-How big is your hard drive, and how much free space do you have?
-How much RAM do you have?
-What version of the OS are you running?
-Is your hard drive OK? I like SMART Utility to check the drive, provides more info than disk utility does.
-Are you running any software that's designed for a PPC mac? You can check that by opening up activity monitor and checking the process types (they should all say Intel or Intel (64 Bit)).
