Iphone
Hi all,
Giving someone an iPhone 2G that i had laying about.
Question: Person in question doesn't have an AT&T data plan and doesn't want one with the iphone, just wants to use it as a phone and wifi only. Having put the simcard in the phone and opening itunes it requests that she upgrades to the 20.00 a mo. package. Is this necessary? How do I get around this?

I agree with George.
The phone needs a "jailbreak" which will allow her to sign up with another carrier.
There are a bunch of websites that can walk you through the jailbreak process.
AT&T was recently ranked the worst cellular service in the world and they charge an arm and a leg.

My understanding is AT&T will track the IMIE number and require a data plan even if you jailbreak it. Haven't tested it but that is what I was told when I was thinking about doing the same thing with an extra iPhone.
If you aren't using AT&T, I don't think you will have any issues.

Pretty serious you are with this one. I hope she's the one. It's fun when you find her.
woops I have nothing actually to add to this thread.

There's no way to make the phone work without a data plan that is in any way supported by Apple. Jailbreaking it is an option, though AT&T will not activate an iPhone without a data plan, nor one that has been altered (e.g. jailbroken).
You could use a sim card from another GSM network like Tmobile. Doing so will require you jailbreak it, which will almost certainly break its functionality with iTunes and prevent future software updates.
