Have a Mac: Want MS Word/Paint type program

So I just got my MacBook Pro a few weeks ago and it's nice - I think I have OS X 10.4.
It seems like I have the standard Notepad word document which blows. Anywhere I can download something more like MS Word or equivalent?
Also, some JPG images I transferred over cannot be opened in iPreview. Any program like MS Paint to open these images and/or crop or do simple edits?

Cheers

W

You can shell out the $$ for MS Office for Mac, or a free alternative is OpenOffice. OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

For an MS Paint type of application also free type the Gimp. GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

I use Paintbrush.
It's pretty much an exact copy of Paint, but for Mac.

Here's a link: Apple - Downloads - Imaging & 3D - Paintbrush

It's called TextEdit, and it actually works quite well for that which it was intended-- simple richtext editing. It was never intended to be an office suite.

MS Word is available for Mac, alternatively you can try iWork, which is cheaper ($80) and arguably better once you get used to the workflow. As well, there's OpenOffice and a number of similar editors.

Also, some JPG images I transferred over cannot be opened in iPreview.
It's called Preview, and it supports just about any image format known. Chances are the "jpg" files are not actually encoded as JPEG images, but simply have that extension.

Any program like MS Paint to open these images and/or crop or do simple edits?
You can do simple editing with iPhoto, just import the images and use the edit features. Alternatively, there's a lot of freeware image manipulation software out there. Else, pick up a copy of photoshop and edit anything you like.

Stupid Q not worth it's own thread: How do I know which version OS X I have? If I just bought it, did it come with 10.6 Snow Leopard?

Click the Apple icon in the task bar, select "About This Mac". The version is displayed. 10.6.x is snow leopard.
