i forgot to add that you can also use the classic (as well as others) as a mass storage device. not that this would be its primary function, but it may come in handy on occasion.

the largest reason is storage. you can now get a touch with 64GB, but that just came out a couple weeks ago. still, the ipod classic is 160GB. if you have a huge library and want to tote a lot of it around with you, this is the best option. i think most ipods are geared toward specific applications. i have a few nanos which just sit, attached to my cars. i have a couple of touches and my iphone which are used for web browsing, gaming and video watching. lastly i have one classic which accompanies my when we travel (especially long distances in the car).
