I got this feeling when telling a coworker that I wanted an Iphone but was just going to buy a used 3g that was like new. You should have seen the look on his face, shock and horror.

The comparison becomes a little tougher considering Apple products don't go on sale. While one could argue that it's because the products are better, it does make them appear a lot more expensive when considering the relative benefits and the relative price. Apple sometimes skirts that line.

Apple products are expensive. It's a lot of money for a lot of people, no doubt.
In terms of relative processing power too, the same power can be bought in a PC for 1/2 to almost a 1/3 the price sometimes.

But they frickin' work. You have to be an ultra-techno-weenie to own and maintain that "powerful" PC... tweak it just right to get the most out of it, etc.
I can buy an iMac for my wife who would still use VCR's if I wasn't around (and the "12:00" would still be flashing too), and she gets on the Mac and is very proficient.

What's funny to me, is when people who may own a German car say that Apple is expensive. Or people who own a boat... Or people who ...

I don't know about that. I own an iPod Nano and an iPhone 3Gs, love them both. I just bought a new computer. Was looking at Macs, but when I found a PC with 8GB Ram, Quad-Core, 1TB hard drive, built-in wireless N, and 20" LCD HD monitor for only $800 when a lesser equipped iMac with 20" screen was going for $2100+ the decision was easy...

I'm an Apple fan, but not a fanboy. Make sense?

I agree with you.

I used to be a PC fan. I always swore that I would never get a mac. I can build a more powerful PC, but as you said; you really need to know your stuff to tweak it just right and keep it running at 100% (if it ever does). I may know a bit, but not enough to constantly keep it up to date nor do I want to take the time to do that.

I remember every PC I owned would eventually slow down, freeze, get viruses, etc. One day my PC kept freezing and not loading web pages, I nearly threw it off the balcony but instead I calmly went to the Apple store and bought the biggest iMac they had at the time. This was just over 2 years ago, and I couldn't be happier. It's always worked well, always been fast.

Now I am a Mac fan. I will never go back to PC.

With a Mac you get simplicity and a learning curve, I won't lie. I've had my Mac for just over a year now. It is amazing and I never NEVER have problems with it.

I purchased my Father a decently priced desktop from HP. It took me two days to get that thing running in any decent way. Not to mention his HP provided speakers don't work all that too often. Windows 7 is definitely the most craptastic OS ever, with Vista just behind it.

The details you're overlooking in that analysis are the same people have been using for the "Macs are expensive" argument for many, many years. Comparable systems are not that much cheaper on the PC side. In some cases, they're more expensive.

There are many things people who are making that comparison tend to gloss over, such as LCD panel quality (Apple's are the best on the market), component quality (8GB of cheap-o error prone crap does not equal the memory Apple ships), hard drive quality, optical drive quality, bus speed, thermal management and cable management within the case where applicable, and so on and so forth.

And that ignores OS X and the plethora of free industry leading software, the retained value inherent to Macs (try and find a 4-5 year old PC laptop worth $1k, for example), and so on and so forth.
