as retarded and obvious of a sentence this is... layers are 100% the most important and useful thing in PS...

It took me years to understand photoshop (I didn't put in THAT much time), simply because I didn't really comprehend layers.

Definitely. If you understand layers then the type of work that you produce improves dramatically.
