Since she's not a techie, she probably does not need a MacBook Pro, so I would suggest the aluminum MacBook for $1299. If portability is the primary concern, the MacBook Air is a great choice, but it does not have an internal CD/DVD drive.

Macbook.
Pick a colour - white or aluminum....both will do the job well, just depends on if she likes the glossy/glass screen or not.
Refurbished/Ask someone for a student number if you don't want to pay full price.

Depends what she's using it for. If she just needs a machine to do standard stuff, email, web, office, and so forth, any of the current MacBooks will do fine. If she wants an especially small/light machine and doesn't regularly use an optical drive, look into the MacBook Air.
If she needs FireWire, or does intensive graphics design or anything else that needs a fair bit of extra horsepower, MacBook Pro is the way to go.

If she needs firewire and only does light Photoshop etc, then the whitebook would be more than enough no?

Incorrect my friend.
the Whitebook that was reintroduced brings back FW400 to those who like 13.3" screens and FW.
Apple - MacBook - White - Technical Specifications - All the specs for the white 13-inch MacBook notebook

as for why no FW in the Unibody Macbooks....probably something to differentiate them from Pro's, or couldn't fit it in the casing.
The Poly/white books already had the tooling to slide a FW400 in there
