Need help wiping a Mac...

I sold my MBA and want to wipe the computer to make sure I don't leave any of my files on it. How do I go about doing this since there is no dvd drive?

As I told you via PM, boot the machine from the install DVD using the Remote Installer utility. From there you can use the format utility to wipe it and reinstall.

If you don't have another machine with a DVD drive, take it to any Apple store and they'll do it for you.

Does formatting on Macs do something different than on PCs? I used to do computer forensics, and a format, while annoying, did not remove the data. I know for PCs, I use GDisk - I imagine there's a Unix/Linux/OS X utility that's similar.

Disk Utility has destructive erase options, ranging from writing everything over with zeros, to doing a 7 or 35 pass nuke and pave.

The 7 pass meets the government's requirements for data destruction. The 35 is for the truly paranoid and takes upwards of a day to complete.

If you WIPE (not format) with one pass, that is enough. Personally, I like it to overwrite it with a standard hex value (E7 or something similar) so I know it did its job. Thanks Simba...
