Yes, it’s very exciting to hear that the Nissan GT-R did 7:29 at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. It’s even a little more exciting to hear that an American car, our new and beloved 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, was the fastest production sedan to lap the circuit in 7:59.
However once a huge Nurburgring champion, Porsche has been keeping a low profile about its Nurburgring numbers. Now the Germany automaker has posted times for its 2009 Porsche 911 at a media event in Germany flaunting its new Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch 7-speed automatic gearbox.
According to Porsche, the 2009 911 Carrera S with PDK turned a lap of time of 7:50. The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S with a manual transmission was 8 seconds slower at 7:58. Comparing it to the current 911 Carrera S with manual transmission (which came in at 8:02), PDK improves the 911’s Nurburgring lap by a total of 12 seconds.
Porsche says that its new PDK dual-clutch 7-speed automatic is 60 percent faster than the Tiptronic S automatic. Not to mention it offers better fuel-economy as well. Without PDK, the Carrera gets a combined fuel-economy of 21.3mpg in U.S. standards - with PDK the Carrera gets 24mpg.

The turbo ring time is 7:40 not 7:50. It was the number that Nissan was gunning for (and beat).
Still, even with the added HP a ring time of 7:50 for a C2S is pretty damn good. It does have me rethinking things but I don't think I could ever go for PDK without spending some time behind the wheel....maybe at my PSDS in October they'll let me play with a PDK?????

Adding PDK with all the other required extras is making the 911 S look a very expensive car. looking at the cost of change away from my current 2006 911S and i think that i am going to need to have deep pockets. I think that i will be staying put with my current version for the short term. I think that the influx of new Japanese cars coming this way over the next few years will also have a bearing on residuals. I am pleased however that Porsche are looking to improve the performance of its 911 range. It used to be the benchmark but others such as Audi and BMW are eroding the brand. Mind you when i first purchased a Porsche you had a simple line up, Boxster and 911. Now Porsche is much more than a pure sports car brand with a Hybrid engine not too far away.

If the PDK can knock 8 seconds off an S, I'm sure it will take at least that much off the turbo. Maybe a PDK ring time for the turbo would drop from 7:40 to 7:30,....or less!
I hope I'm not going to regret getting another 6-speed!
