why they use the rear wheel as reference point to show the longer wheel base? because it's RWD?
did they use old C4 or C2 width as reference to compare the new?

They used the Carrera 2. But you read it right, the rear track isn't any wider on the 991. The hips appear wider though because the rear of the greenhouse is slightly pinched together.

I presume this is because the track is measured to the middle of the tread. With wider rubber on the rears, the measurement of the track is narrowed.
I would doubt the outside edge of the rear tyres is narrower than the fronts.
