Have you checked out 'Meetup.com'...people have car meets in SF all the time with it. It's a fun way to meet new people and see their rides too. I would recommend anything to eat (especially seafood) at Fishermen Wharf. Your kids will get a kick out of watching the sea lions there and there are regular 'tourist' traps type gift shops too.
