Unlimited Autosport : 997 C2 mods
Recently, a favorite client of ours came in with his newly acquired 2005 Porsche 997 C2 with 9500 miles on the odometer. He was less than happy with the factory exhaust note and requested a more aggressive sounding exhaust. We sold and installed a set of Techart sport mufflers for him. When he picked up the car he couldn't believe how great the car sounded. This is the way this car should have sounded from the factory. This was also his 1st upgrade with many more to follow.
A few weeks later he came back with another request. He wanted a bit more power, power he would feel. We talked about the added power and reliability of aftermarket and factory products alike. He did not want anything that was untested nor did he want a supercharger or turbocharger at that time. So we sold him an IPD intake plenum, Evolution airbox and FVD performance software. This combination is a proven path to impressive increases in horsepower and torque. Throttle response is also enhanced making this an excellent upgrade. After he drove the car he loved the new found power and had no doubt regarding any performance claims, he was and remains, completely satisfied.
A few weeks later our client came in for his next round of upgrades. This time he was complaining that the car felt a little sloppy when driving through the twisty roads on his Sunday morning drives. Sway bars were a logical choice. We installed H&R adjustable sway bars on the front and rear of the car. We set them up with a bit more stiffness in the rear than in front to allow a predictable amount of oversteer. When he drove it the following weekend he was amazed by the increased feel and sharpness upon turn-in. The sloppiness was no longer there and the car felt more stable.
When the winter was over our client came back for a new set of wheels. He wanted a summer set of wheels and tires to save the factory wheels for winter. We sat down together and looked at many types of quality forged 3 piece wheels and zeroed in on BBS LMs. He liked the styling and race-bred heritage of BBS wheels and their long history with Porsche. We spend alot of time here at Unlimited researching all of our suppliers and manufacturers to ensure the best possible products for our clientele. This particular set of wheels are 8.5" x 19" in front and 11" x 19" in the rear. We also chose Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta tires for this car. We mounted and road force balanced the new tire and wheel package and installed it on the car. We had the lug bolts refinished in a special order semi-gloss black. Our client was amazed at how much of an effect the new wheels and tires had on the overall look of his car. There was also a very noticeable increase in performance with the new wheels and tires. The only problem he had was that the car sat too high for his liking and of course, ours.
We sat down again and discussed all options for lowering the car. He did not want to install lowering springs on his stock struts. We discussed lowering springs with an upgraded strut assembly like a Bilstein and our client nixed that as well. We decided on a simple coilover setup. We selected the H&R Cup kit, a simple coilover with no adjustments for rebound or dampening. The ride height however, is adjustable. We set the car up with a 1.5" drop in front and 1.25" drop in the rear. Then we performed a 4-wheel alignment to factory 997 gt3 specs. He drove the car after this set of upgrades and fell in love with the car, again.
For the next set of upgrades our client wanted some interior and exterior modifications. On the interior we went with a Techart pedal set which comes with the gas, brake and clutch pedal. He also chose the Techart footrest to match. He didn't care for the plastic door sill covers installed by the factory so we changed them to the stainless steel version with the carrera script etched across it. For the exterior we decided to swap out the ugly orange front turn signals in favor of the newer smoked turn signals. On the rear of the car we added a Techart Rear Spoiler 1 to the decklid. We also swapped out the gold factory hood and steering wheel emblems for a simpler more elegant silver set. When he picked up the car this time he said it was perfect. The car was exactly what he always wanted. Our client says that his only regret is that hadn't pursued these upgrades sooner.
