Buying a car but not a Porsche expert, could use some help putting a value on this.

I am interested in this car. I haven't ever done any research on these early models though, so what is there that I must know about these cars? Are they good, reliable cars? How much HP does the engine have? And what model is this? It looks different from other 2000 Carreras and I can't seem to find out what a "Carrera 2" is. Lastly, how much should I try to get this car for? I went and took a look at it earlier today. The only problem I could see was that the leather on the sides of the seats was cracked. Would this car be preferable to a newer Cayman around the same value (whatever this car is worth?)

It's nice and well-specced with aerokit, sport design wheels and some carbon fiber on the interior. 300hp, so quick by normal car standards, but not really eye-opening in a straight line. I'd pay about $20K for it, probably less. But, I doubt they'd sell it at that price.
Major problems with these cars are intermediate shaft failure, cylinder d-chunking and rear main-seal leakage/seepage. The IMS and d-chunking cause catastrophic failure of the motor, although there are fixes for both of these by LN Engineering. Other than that, the interiors are dated on the 996 and have lots of cheap plastic.
I wouldn't buy it personally, and would definitely pursue a newer Cayman over this.

what he said. aftermarket wing on the back will be tough resale I believe so the lower the price the better.

Aftermarket? I assumed that would be part of the aero kit. I went down to the dealer to check it out and during negotiation asked to see the invoice, but they kept avoiding. They pulled some BS that this is a very rare car and said that according to Cars.com there are only 7 in the entire United States. Pulled up Cars.com and said "See, we are pricing them around what other dealers are pricing them." They wanted 30 and went down to 29. I offered 25 OTD and the dealer said "We'll pass." I think 25 was a very generous offer, they probably got it for like 19 or something on the trade-in.

It likely is a factory aerokit...none of the aftermarket kits include those ugly winglets bolted on on either side of the rear bumper. That's almost a telltale sign that it's factory.
That wing is known as the "taco" wing...also found on the .1 GT3 that we never got here in N. America.

It was probably a dealer special.
When I bought my Turbo, the salesman first tried to sell me a C4S that had some ugly wing on it claiming that it was a special custom car made especially for that dealer.
I gagged.

It's a good looking car, but not with those hideous rear end winglets. 30k will buy you a great Cayman.
Find a Cayman that fits your needs and you will be happy.
