Thinking of buying a 996 turbo
#14
things i'd like out for:
- coolant hoses are crap - mine started popping off around 70k miles, fixed those, & then others popped off - i believe SharkWerks recommends changing these for most Porsches these days
- plastic coolant box - it's right by turbo, lots of heat cycles, gets brittle fast
- wheel bearings (though i haven't had any issues & i'm at 90k miles)
- 2nd gear pop-out ('02 issue only)
- modified suspension may cause various issues: door windows popping off tracks, sunroof popping off track, wiring issues (some speakers in mine buzz in & out)
- maf
- light malfunction around 60k for me - forget exact issue, easier fix
- power steering gasket blew around 85k - easier fix
things i'd change asap:
- remove the clutch assist - Evo sells the kit - makes the clutch usable instead of buttery, will probably result in less clutch wear too (you have to slip the stock set-up)
- plugs go *fast* - change them asap
- fuel filter goes even faster - change asap
- coolant hoses - drop engine & put proper clamps on all of them
- upgrade diverter valves
- get a real boost gauge - stock one is inaccurate & slow and if a hose pops off, you could overboost w/o knowing it (bye bye rods)
- chuck

Excellent advice, carendt242.
Highly recommend sending your 996TT over to Sharkwerks for some magic. Don't need to go crazy if you don't want to spend too much, but they'll make sure it's running solid (and give it a little jolt for you).

997.1 is the last of the GT1 motor, after that it's the 9A1 non raced motor.
996 is at the sweet depreciation spot, which I suspect is why the OP wants one, smart money man.
997 has a ways to go before it gets there.
