a 996tt makes the exact sort of sound Barrister describes - it is the ecu pulling back timing aggressively. it's not a good sound, which is probably good, b/c your foot immediately comes off the gas

as for getting a 108 octane mix with 20% race gas - i don't understand that. i thought the mix was linear - if you're mixing 80% 91 to get 108, the race gas octane would need to be 176????

the EVO guys use the factory ECU to adjust timing, based on your gas, with fuel/ignition maps from 91 to XXX. no more flicking switches, watching your gas, etc. it's really the best thing in the world. i would ask BBI to do the same.

Glad I'm not the only one stumped by this ...

I misspoke. It should take it to 100 octane.

It has about 12,500 miles. The car was originally sold in June of 2007.

I purchased the car in November of 2007 with 900 miles on it.

The knock sensor is detecting detonation and retarding the timing like Chuck said...that's the "pinging" you're hearing. In that particular motor, even if it was detonating to high hell, it would be damn hard to hear over the sound of the intake, exhaust/turbos, etc. The car wouldn't just "stop pulling" either.

What I'm trying to say is, you're fine, just don't beat on it too hard on a hot day.

What race gas? To get it that high you'd have to run leaded, which would clog O2 sensors. You can get unleaded 100 pump gas at plenty of 76 stations around here. I put a couple of gallons in when I run my motor hard to get octane up to the recommended 93.

In other news, California gas sucks.

I run a high octane additive called SERA Race Fuel. A 10% infusion makes the car run faster and cooler. It has worked like a charm in the past and better than even a full tank of 100 from 76.
