Did i read your post correctly in that they have a 2003 Turbo for 60k? If so you are getting taken for a ride - you should be able to purchase one significantly cheaper than that in this market.
Yep - 100%

Thank God for public colleges.

There's always student loans.

You're math's right, but you're forgetting the differential in depreciation over the next X years. If he keeps the 997TT for another three years, and it drops in value to, let's say 70k, the 996TT will still maybe be worth 45k (those may be optimistic estimates on both sides). So, over 3 years, he saves an additional 15k in depreciation value.

To add into the equation, though, the 996TT will be completely out of warranty, so how much will be spent on maintenance that would be warrantied with the 997TT?

Truthfully, there's certainly a delta, but it might not be as useful as it looks at first glance.

How can you be upside down on a relatively new car? Did you not put good money down on it?

This is why I don't like to finance toys. I switch them too often and it creates more variables in the equation.

Probably due to depreciation.

That is why if you must finance a car simply put down at least 50% so you are always ahead of the depreciation curve.
