I can tell you right now what his problem is - and GrayTT can back me up if I am right.
He didn't wait for the "Check OK" light to come on before turning the car over. The car will start if you jump the gun, but the immobilizer will not let you engage first gear. You must put the key in, turn it 1/4 turn and then wait for the "Check OK" light. Then you can turn the key the rest of the way. If you don't, not all of the electronic systems work properly - including the gearbox.
Either that or he wasn't putting his foot on the brake firmly enough to let him engage.
I don't think it was a mechanical failure. Homeboy just needs to read the manual.

I'm not one to laugh, I've never driven a F1 gearbox / SMG or anything of that sort.
I can drive stickshift all day long but wouldn't have a clue how to get started with a paddle shifter car.

If you don't follow it just right, you can run into trouble. The 360 would not start at all if you didn't follow the procedure. But the F430 will start but not function properly.
These are quirky cars indeed!

Damn right - 3 pedals and he would have been gone.
Who the hell gets in a 1/4 million USD car without knowing how to pull off from a stop?
