It's like they're on a Mission from God to destory nice cars.
Was it dark? Were they wearing sunglasses? And how far from Chicago were they?

Regarding the integrity, or lack hereof, of the passenger cell, and those dudes still surviving, these images has to be post get-the-firemen-to-cut-them-out. That process probably contributed to the carnage.

meh it says they were cut from the car, so I'm sure the car didn't look as bad as the pic when safety guys got there
