The company that funded the development of Google "maps" also funded the license plate software... Well... not really a company, but more of a, shall we say... agency...
fo real. That same software will run your plate if a cop car drives up behind you, with no input from the cop... watch yourself...

From what I understand, the degree of accuracy is rather high. I happen to know about it because the agency, err... firm that bankrolled those apps took an interest in my little start up.
