World-travelling Ferrari 246 Dino is Ready for a Fresh Restoration

This Ferrari has been to the US, the UK and of course, Italy. Now it is ready to return to concours condition.

We believe there’s no longer a stigma with the Dino. Now firmly established as a thoroughbred Ferrari, this petite V6 sporting coupe has had a resurgence of admiration. Some examples have been excellent survivors, but this one consigned by RM Sotheby’s is ready to be refreshed.

There’s a distinct beauty of seeing bare sheet metal. Especially metal which was envisioned and shaped by Scaglietti. Errant grinder marks smooth out the metal’s imperfections and markings will soon be painted over. But it just goes to show the effort put into panels refreshed by hand rather than those stamped into shape by emotionless machines.

What you see here is essentially a blank canvas. Having been crashed, previously restored and then stripped to be restored once more, this Dino is ready for completion. Though the photos show an incomplete car, almost all parts needed to complete the car will be included with the sale. The re-upholstered seats and black leather trim interior will look great when completed, but it will be up to the new owner to pick the shade of paint.

More importantly, all of the mechanical aspects of the car have been revitalized. The pictures show a fully rebuilt V6 engine and transmission. Not only has it been re-built, but all hardware appears to be given a new zinc coating, bringing the engine to a like-new appearance. As well, brakes and suspension are ready to hit the road.

The original hue of this car was Blu Dino Metalizzato, but the new owner may pick any color they choose. While a purist may want to stay as original as possible, it is not fully necessary. A new owner may choose the classic Ferrari red, but for us, we’d like to see it be the original blue. If only because metallic paint highlights the beautiful Scaglietti lines.

For those with a bit of ambition and a desire to have an essentially all-new Dino, this 246 will cross the RM Sotheby’s auction block in Paris on February 5. Price is estimated to land between $300,000 and $360,000 USD.
