Test Drive Ends With Brand New Porsche Turbo Totaled
With a six-figure test drive mistake, this potential customer proved he wasn’t quite ready for Porsche ownership.Â
For decades, Porsche’s 911 Turbo has been too much car for the average wealthy Joe to handle. In recent years, some of that has been mitigated with the advent of driver assist systems and computers that can react faster than you can blink your eyes. Unfortunately, in that time, the car’s speed has increased to the point where those same folks still can’t properly drive one without wrecking something. A 911 Turbo is a mind-numbingly quick machine that can bend the laws of physics, but it can’t fix stupid.
This wreck probably could have been avoided if the driver hadn’t been driving so quickly on a narrow street, or if he’d been paying more attention, or if he hadn’t succumbed to target fixation. The car is good enough that it probably still could have made the corner if he’d simply lifted off the throttle and steered more to the right. As so often happens, people who are taken by surprise while driving will focus on the car in the oncoming lane, and your brain instinctively steers toward wherever you’re looking. It’s why you’re taught not to look at the apex cone in autocross, because you’ll inevitably hit it. This guy is lucky he was driving a modern 911 Turbo, because, in a vintage one, he’d have ended up backward in a tree several hundred yards before he ever saw this car.

When the car is completely perpendicular to the camera, you can see a rear fender intake, denoting this car as a Turbo, which has a starting price of $161,800. It is entirely possible that this car is a less expensive certified-pre-owned Porsche, but even still, especially including the value of the other car taken out, this accident was well into the six-figure range. Thankfully there was a security camera running on top of what looks to be a Land Rover dealership so we could see the whole story unfold. Be careful out there, folks. Don’t drive while dumb.
