Team Speed at Monterey Car Week

Singer Vehicle Design lands a hole-in-one at Monterey Car Week with its lightweight take on the Porsche 911.

Team Speed is at Monterey Car Week, ready to bring to you the greatest sights of classic and modern motoring around, and nothing makes our hearts sing quite like a Singer Porsche 911. Founded by former Catherine Wheel frontman Rob Dickinson (whose song “Black Metallic” was about one of his 911s), Singer Vehicle Design takes the classic 964 911, and re-imagines each one into a truly special machine.

And speaking of special, Singer dropped its latest and greatest at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, with the North American debut of the Singer Porsche 911 DLS.

Originally bowing at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the 911 DLS (Dynamics and Lightweighting Study) is powered by a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six developed by Williams Advanced Engineering, packing 500 horses at 9,100 rpm. The engine has four titanium valves per cylinder, lightweight throttle bodies with F1-inspired upper and lower injectors, and an optimized oiling system to keep the boxer cool and smooth.

Colin Chapman’s philosophy continues throughout the rest of the 911 DLS, from the specially designed carbon fiber Recaro sport seats and Momo steering wheel, to the extensive use of titanium, magnesium, and carbon fiber inside the car. The whole body itself is composed of carbon fiber panels, as well, resulting in a weight of only 2,182 pounds; a standard 964, for comparison, weighs anywhere between 3,031 and 3,252 pounds.

As Dickinson told CarBuzz a while back, the 911 DLS is but one of a few milestones for his company, which also includes Singer’s 10th anniversary, and the delivery of their 100th commission. “We are humbled and honored to be shown upon the world stage at the Pebble Beach Concours,” said Dickinson. And we at Team Speed are humbled and honored to be near this wonderful Singer Porsche 911.
