Do You Really Want a Racecar for the Street?
This Porsche owner’s idea of a good time is a street-legal GT3 Cup car.Â
If you have ever thought to yourself that you needed to build a racing car that was street legal, you’re not alone. We have that thought all the time. We love going fast and romanticize the idea of driving a street car to the track, cleaning house, and then driving home at the end of the day. In theory that sounds like a lot of fun, but in practice, it’s a bit more difficult to live with. Race cars are fast, but they’re also uncompromisingly so. They’re built to the hilt for performance, but not exactly for the long-term comfort of their occupants. A motorsport-oriented car is loud, hot, uncomfortable, and rattly. Could you deal with that every day?
Porsche’s 991.1 generation GT3 is already a pretty amazing street car, with 475 horsepower, an attractive set of bodywork, and a comfortable interior with proper A/C, a good infotainment system, an amazing PDK gearbox, and great seats. The reality is, that while a GT3 doesn’t offer the comfort of a Bentley, it could easily be pushed into daily driver service without inflicting too much pain on yourself or the car. That all went out the window with this build.

The owner of this car wanted stiffer suspension, more advanced aerodynamic downforce, a louder Akrapovic exhaust system, wider sticky Pirelli tires, more power, and a stripped down interior to create what is essentially a GT3 Cup car for the street. HG Motorsports was more than happy to build such a car for him. Is it really useable on a daily basis anymore? No. Even though it is perfectly street legal, it wouldn’t be wise to use this car on a rainy day, or for a long road trip. Does that make it any less badass, or prevent us from wanting one of our own? Not at all.
