Porsche x Almond Surfboard Collection Celebrates SoCal Culture
New Porsche x Almost surfboard collection celebrates SoCal culture from the ’60s with beautiful vintage single-fin boards that are built by hand.
There are several things that Southern California is famous for – sunny weather, beautiful coastlines, epic surfing opportunities, and of course, arguably being the birthplace of car culture in general. Porsche also enjoys a strong presence in SoCal for these very same reasons – people just appreciate an iconic sports car there, which is precisely why there are also so many Porsche-themed shows and events that take place in the same exact area. Thus, Porsche recently decided to pay tribute to SoCal in a very special way – and by combining two things that it’s synonymous with into one.
The result is the new Porsche x Almond Single Fins & Air Cooled Engines surfboard collection, which is hand-made in Costa Mesa, California by Almond Surfboards, and available in three classic 911 hues from the early days of the 1960s – Bahama Yellow, Polo Red, and Irish Green – plus the famous Pink Pig racing livery, to boot. Each surfboard in this special collection is individually numbered and features a racing number of 63 – referring to the 911’s first year of existence – that can be customized to each customer’s preference, along with specially-designed single fins.
The Porsche x Almond surfboards can be had in two sizes – the 7’10” Cash-Yew II and the 9’11” Surf Thumb long board, but both feature the same numbering, a black Porsche logo, and “Made in California” markings. Almond Surfboards makes each by hand at its own shop from Polyurethane foam with basswood stringers, after which they’re wrapped in a fiberglass shell with two layers of six ounce cloth on the deck and one layer on the bottom. As for the famous single fin, it’s hand-foiled from 36 layers of six ounce fiberglass cloth. Each board comes with a wooden wall bracket too, because these things are too beautiful not to show off.
Ultimately, the concept behind the Porsche x Almond collection is to pay homage to both the surf culture and Porsche’s presence in SoCal in the 1960s, and it’s a nice little throwback that’s accompanied by a collection of apparel and accessories. That lineup consists of a variety of commemorative t-shirts, a hoodie, sweatshirt, trucker hat, iron-on patch, and keychain, all of which can be purchased at Porsche’s online shop, select Porsche Design store locations, and the Almond Surf Shop.
Back in the 1960s, surf culture in SoCal was booming, and at the same time, the Porsche 911 entered this world and left quite the impact on that same geographic area. At the time, one could see any number of classic air-cooled machines toting around singe-fin surfboards, which is precisely what inspired the creation of this new collection – along with celebrating the heritage and appeal of both famous brands.
“The Porsche Lifestyle Group is constantly expanding its product portfolio to extend the sports car experience for Porsche enthusiasts beyond the automobile,” said Karsten von Engeln, President & CEO, Porsche Design of America, Inc. “As part of a new collaboration initiative designed to celebrate our longstanding connection with California, we are extremely excited to launch our first ‘Made in California’ initiative. With Almond Surfboards and their bespoke approach to building custom-made surfboards in California, we couldn’t have found a better partner to translate the unique Porsche Lifestyle to the waves. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the limited-edition Porsche x Almond Surfboard Collection in classic Porsche 911 colors and one of the most legendary racing liveries in our stores this October.”
“At Almond, we have always been captivated by design that is not only beautiful but enduring,” added Dave Allee, founder and owner of Almond Surfboards. “Porsche exemplifies that blend of timeless aesthetics and precision engineering, making them a perfect partner as we both strive to create products that stand the test of time.
