Porsche Driver Offers World's Lamest Excuse to Traffic Cops

Driver in China claims a fortune teller advised him to break the law for prosperity’s sake. He receives very predictable response from cops.

Where’s La Toya Jackson’ Psychic Friends or Zoltar when you need them?!? It looks like there is a Porsche driver in East Asia who could use a reliable fortune teller after suffering a major fail upon adhering to the advice of his local soothsayer.

Now, when that little kid summoned Zoltar the fortune teller in the classic film Big, he got exactly what he asked for — with an unexpected side of trouble. And more recently, when a Porsche owner in China tried following the advice of a local fortune teller in an attempt to get out of a ticket, he also got into a heap of trouble in a scenario that is almost as funny as the 1988 Tom Hanks comedy.

According to a report that initially appeared in China’s Qianjiang Evening News and was later picked up in the South China Morning Post, a driver in China, identified as simply Zhu, was recently stopped by traffic police while driving around the city of Lishui with expired temporary license plates on his newly-purchased Porsche. And when it came time to answer to the cops who had pulled him over, the local businessman pulled out what is perhaps the most awesome—and awesomely stupid—excuse for failing to properly get his Porsche road-legal.

“It is a new car and a fortune teller told me the plates must not be put up in April,” Zhu reportedly told the cops with a straight face about why he was driving around with temporary plates that expired on April 26. “I need to wait for an auspicious day, which has not been decided yet, to do that for road safety and a prosperous business,” he added.

‘It is a new car and a fortune teller told me the plates must not be put up in April. I need to wait for an auspicious day…’

Of course, you didn’t need a crystal ball nor tarot cards to know what happened next. The local police were not amused—nor gullible—and Zhu got himself a few things the fortune teller should have warned him about: a fine and 12 points added to his license, which was also reportedly suspended.

Making matters even more bizarre is the fact that Zhu claimed that he actually had the proper plates sitting in the trunk of his Porsche. But he was waiting for the month to pass and that “auspicious day” to arrive before installing the plates on his vehicle.

Now, we don’t know how they roll in China when it comes to points on a license, but here in the good ol’ U.S. of A., a driver’s license is usually suspended for 60 days if 12 points are assessed against the license within a three-year period.

“Accumulating points on your driving record is costly,” according to DMV.org. “Your insurance premiums will go up, and after a specific number of points, your license can be suspended or revoked; to get your license reinstated you will pay hundreds of dollars in fines and fees.”

The unfortunate thing for Zhu is that he will reportedly have to pay a fee and retake a driving test to get his license reinstated. The good news, of course, is that he’s the owner of a new Porsche, and that more than makes up for the humiliation of going viral over an excuse that would have made Miss Cleo chuckle. Plus, he got lucky with the fine, too, reportedly having to fork over only 200 yuan, which equals around $30.
