Porsche 993 GT2 Evo Sells for $1.45M at Auction

Most powerful air-cooled Porsche brings seven figures at Mecum Indy auction.

“Air-cooled Porsches.” Uttering the very phrase will send some collectors scrambling for their checkbooks. When the car at hand is the most powerful air-cooled Porsche, you can almost hear the pen furiously scribbling a seven-figure amount. At Mecum Indy 2017, this 993-generation 911 GT2 Evo brought in an air-cool $1.45 million on the auction block.

Ironically, in the crazy air-cooled Porsche market, that seems like a reasonable buy. A non-Evo 993 GT2 sold less than a year ago for $2.4 million at Sotheby’s. Considering the GT2 Evo represents a street-legal(ish) race car, the $1-million discount might make a real winner out of the buyer. Nevertheless, it was the top seller at the Indy Mecum auction, despite the typical muscle-car clientele.

All that said, Porsche made this ultimate version of the GT2 definitive. The rollcage and racing seat represent absolute necessities, because the owner could very easily charge from the auction block to the racetrack. Extreme-width rear tires (and matching flares) help, at least attempt to help, put down 600 horsepower from a highly strung, twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter engine. The intercooler, mounted above the engine, resembles the size of an average coffee table. Taking that theme of excess to its logical conclusion, Porsche stuck an absolutely massive two-plane wing on the rear.

The odometer on this particular Evo reads less than 7,000 kilometers. Since its previous owner raced it, the car had a minor racing accident that has since been repaired. Nevertheless, the car is all-original where it counts: chassis, tub, and engine. Everything about the GT2 Evo screams “Race me!” While that’s unlikely to happen with its value and rarity, the new owner can take solace in having a car ready to rip their face off on the track, should they decide to do so. Pre-auction estimates figured $1 million to $1.5 million, so the $1.45 million comes as little surprise.
