Welcome to the Machine: Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason’s Ferraris

By -

Mason is definitely on Ferrari’s invite list to buy their cream of the cream of the crop limited edition cars. He does own a LaFerrari but was stopped from lending that to Top Gear when they first tried to arrange getting “The Holy Trinity” of a Porsche 918, McLaren P1 and, of course, the LaFerrari together for a comparison film. Ferrari refused to lend Top Gear a LaFerrari unless the comparison was on their terms, and stated that if a customer lent the show one, that person would be blacklisted from buying any future limited-edition Ferrari. However, there is still some great footage of Mason’s LaFerrari on YouTube.

Mason’s collection is far from just Ferrari’s though. It’s widely regarded as one of the best in the world and includes, amongst others, Maseratis, Aston Martins, Bugattis and Porsches. He has realized his dream to race at Le Mans and still races his cars in historic events as wel as being a regular at the Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed in the U.K.

If you took the fact Mason is a rock star out of the equation, we would still rank him as a petrol head amongst petrol heads. Even without the crazy Pink Floyd money there’s little doubt that, even on a slimmer budget, Nick Mason would still have found himself racing and collecting cars.

Ian's obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic, then he trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop Wright from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
