New Mercedes-Benz GLE 580 has an Electric Surprise
Mercedes will further expand GLE model range with introduction of V8-powered M-B GLE 580 4MATIC.
Mercedes-Benz recently announced a new addition to the GLE SUV range that features some astounding technology. The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE 580 4Matic sports a biturbo 4.0 liter V8. This engine is nothing new to the Mercedes fleet, but its “mild hybrid” addition is what sets it apart. The GLE 580 features Mercedes’ integrated starter generator (ISG). Being that the SUV’s essential amenities like air conditioning, power steering, and water pump are electric, you will not find any accessory drive belts on the front of this engine. Simply put, the ISG is working with the engine to power these components, instead of drawing off of it, allowing more efficient operation. Much like a hybrid or electric vehicle’s regenerative braking system, it saves energy already being expended and puts it to use.
The GLE 580 4Matic has a very healthy power output at 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. If that isn’t quite enough to impress you, the ISG has another trick up its sleeve. It can be momentarily used for an EQ Boost that adds another 21 horsepower and an astonishing 184 lb-ft of torque, doing so by acting as an electric motor, assisting the engine rather than directly powering the wheels. To put that in perspective, that additional 184 lb-ft is more than a new Honda Civic Sport outputs at its peak.
Mercedes’ slick engineering does not stop in the engine bay, though. The GLE 580 4Matic features an all-new interior design for 2020. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system touts things you’d expect, such as voice commands. It truly shines with its augmented reality navigation, a feature that uses a front-facing camera and real-time animations to enhance the delivery of navigation commands. To add to the list of impressive tech found in the SUV, it features the world’s first 48-volt active suspension system, with automatic dampening adjustment ensuring desired ride quality across varying terrains.
The new SUV is not Mercedes’ first venture into the electric future. It is, however, the first time the ISG and EQ Boost technologies have been offered on a V8. While Mercedes has been advancing towards more efficient vehicles, M-B has made it very clear that the company has no desire to sacrifice performance or luxury.
The GLE 580 4Matic starts at $76,800, with the MBUX infotainment system, luxurious leather interior, and AMG line exterior coming as standard. It joins the GLE 350, GLE 350 4MATIC and GLE 450 4MATIC models, and will go on sale in the U.S. later this year.
