New Land Rover Defender is the Most Advanced Lego Kit Ever

Defender in small-scale toy version features a working winch and a functional all-wheel-drive system.

Over the past few years, Lego building block kits have become far more advanced and with the introduction of the new Land Rover Defender, the well-known toy-maker has created its most technical model to date. As part of the Lego Technic series, this small scale sport utility vehicle features four-wheel independent suspension, a functional transmission, a functional three-speed transfer case, an engine with moving parts, a rack-and-pinion steering system that you can control from the roof and a full complement of body panels that open and close like the real thing.

While the Lego Technic kits have become much more advanced in recent years, the new Defender kit is unlike anything that we have seen in the past, making this a challenging new addition to the collection of any Lego or Land Rover enthusiast.

Lego Defender Details

The new Land Rover Defender from Lego is item number 42110 on the company website. When assembled, this small-scale SUV is 17 inches long, 9 inches tall and 8 inches wide, so it is one of the toy company’s larger kits, with a total of 2,573 pieces coming together to create the intricate model.

While the nature of Lego blocks creates some restrictions in perfectly replicating the form of a Land Rover, the size of the model and the level of detail leaves no question that this is the new Defender. The kit comes with unique wheels that are similar to the wheels on the actual vehicle, and the rear-mounted spare also serves as the trigger for the rear door latch. There is even a cargo rack on the roof with a ladder for easy access to those tools needed for safe off-roading, along with the familiar cargo case on the passenger’s side rear corner.

High Tech All-Wheel-Drive

On the inside, the Lego SUV mimics the full-sized vehicle in terms of layout and detail, but the cabin is where we find the most unique aspect of this kit. This tiny Defender has a working transmission shifter along with a three-speed adjustment for the all-wheel-drive system. When you open the rear hatch, you can actually see the different gear ratios being engaged as you work the levels between the front seats.

Also, the steering wheel is connected to the front wheels by means of a basic rack-and-pinion system, so you can turn the front wheels with the steering wheel, but to make it easier, there is also a knob on the roof that allows you to control the angle of the front wheels.

When coupled with the four-wheel independent suspension, this Land Rover is the most advanced and most capable Lego kit to date, going so far as to include a working winch, just in case the two-speed all-wheel-drive system and independent suspension leaves you stuck while rolling this Defender around your living room floor.

Defender Large and Small

As you might imagine, this is not your average Lego car that you buy for your kid for a couple bucks. This kit has an MSRP of $199.99, which is fairly inexpensive for one of these large, highly detailed kits. For example, the Lego Bugatti Chiron is $349.99 while the 4×4 Xtreme Off-Roader is $249.99. The first units are scheduled to ship to buyers on October 1, 2019, so if you love the new Defender, the Land Rover brand or if you just love Lego kits, this is one that you will want to add to your collection. These do sell out, so if you really want one, you don’t want to wait to order.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
