Meet the 5 People Who Give Life to a Nissan GT-R
Nissan recently unveiled the 2017 model year GT-R at the New York Auto Show, and also gave us an inside look at what it takes to build the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine found inside each example of Godzilla.
There are only five master technicians, called “Takumi,” that have the skills and talent to assemble the GT-R’s engine — Shioya Izumi, Tetsuji Matsumoto, Tsunemi Ooyama, Hiroyuki Ichikawa and Takumi Kurosawa.
These Takumi use their senses to measure what machines cannot, often dealing with tolerances measuring in microns.
The 2017 engine has the strictest demands for precision, now producing 565 horsepower, and represents the best of what the Takumis can achieve.
It’s amazing to think that only five people are building the engines for all of the GT-Rs sold around the world.
