How Lamborghini Went from Tractors to Supercars

By -

‘It all started because a tourist with a weird bull obsession was really good at building tractors, and he hated Ferrari.’

Lamborghini is a strange company with an extremely convoluted history. Ferruccio Lamborghini was a tractor manufacturer and a customer of Ferrari. Long story short, he lodged some complaints with Enzo and was told to pound sand. It made him mad enough to start his own sports car company.

As it happens, Ferruccio was quite good at making cars, too. This video from Donut Media follows the progression from the beginning to the current day. It’s done in an interesting and entertaining way that makes you happy to sit through it.

It’s worth mentioning that if Enzo Ferrari hadn’t been so terrible to deal with, the world probably wouldn’t have the Ford GT or Lamborghini. If he hadn’t been a jerk to Ferruccio, we’d never have seen the Countach or the Miura, and that would be a crying shame. For an Italian tractor manufacturer, Lamborghini did a wonderful job of building sports cars. So well, in fact, that they crafted the world’s first true supercar. They’ve stuck with the mid-engine naturally-aspirated V12 formula ever since. It almost goes without saying that the world is a better place for it.

While the company suffered a few bouts of financial insolvency, they’ve embodied a unique brand craziness for decades, and don’t show any sign of stopping. Lamborghini has changed dramatically many times. Since Ferruccio, they’ve been owned by Swiss financiers, South Asian financiers, Chrysler, and now Volkswagen/Audi. But in a way, they really haven’t changed at all. Their cars keep getting faster, wilder and more exotic, but deep down they’re all pure Lamborghini good. Which model is your favorite?
