Ferrari Unexpectedly Announces New 488 J50 Targa
Ferrari’s surprise announcement of the commemorative J50 includes less roof, and more power.
If you’re ever planning a surprise party, let Ferrari handle the work. This morning they announced a limited run of 488 Targa models named the J50. Signalling Ferrari’s appreciation for doing business in Japan for the last 50 years, a total of ten J50 models will be made. Sleeker styling in the front and back set it apart from the standard 488, and new interior touches distinguish it as well.
Completely re-designed front end treatments include a lower nose, with narrower, horizontal headlights and a wide-open grill across the entire front. An accent line wraps around the front of the car as well, terminating at each door handle. It serves to espouse similar accent lines used on the F40 and F50. Around the back, the flying-buttress styling has made a beautiful return.
Open-top driving is primarily the purpose of the J50, but there is a storable carbon fiber top if one finds themself in an unfortunate mix up of weather predictions. The other way of keeping the rain out is to simply out-drive it. With 681 horsepower available, you’ll outrun the most ominous of cold-fronts. The 20 additional horsepower is derived from a tuned version of the 488’s turbocharged 3.9-liter V8.
Pricing announcements have yet to be made, but we expect there will be a high premium over the 488. Japan’s fervent love for the prancing horse is widely known, so you can expect all ten to be scooped up rather quickly.
