Ferrari Collector David Lee Finally Gets a LaFerrari Aperta

Multimillionaire David Leereveals why it took him five years to add a Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta to his collection.

The prancing horse brand has a very special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts worldwide. The chairman and CEO of Hing Wa Lee Group, David Lee, is probably one of the most famous Ferrari collectors globally. However, one particular Ferrari model always eluded the business tycoon until recently. When David Lee finally added a LaFerrari Aperta to his glorious collection, all that changed recently.

For those unfamiliar with the LaFerrari Aperta, the Italian brand first introduced this open-top model at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The company also revealed that it would only manufacture 200 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta for the public. Prices of this ultra-exclusive supercar started at $2.2 million, but since then, these cars have sold for almost $10 million.

Ferrari sold LaFerrari Aperta via invitations sent out to its VIP customers. Unfortunately, the Italian car manufacturer did not offer David Lee the opportunity to buy its highly coveted supercar. Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta’s production run ended in 2018. It took David Lee 5 years to add this supercar to his collection finally.

In one of his recent videos, David reveals why he had to wait so long to get a LaFerrari Aperta.

“Ferrari was upset, you know. Ferrari thought, um basically, the factory in Italy thought that I was using the media to basically force them um to um you know, sell me a car, and that is exactly what I wasn’t trying to do, and so they were upset. It was a dark time for me for sure,” explains Lee.

The video itself is pretty sensational. We get to see the LaFerrari Aperta take to the streets of Los Angeles while making an intoxicating racket out of its exhaust. A 6.3-liter V12 motor powers this supercar and hooks up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The hybrid powerplant produces 950 HP of maximum power and 664 lb-ft of peak torque.

Towards the end of the video, Lee also shares why he waited so long to reveal his latest acquisition. “I didn’t wanna tell my story until now. Now I have bought the LaFerrari Aperta, and now that I have bagged the big five,” said Lee. He further adds,” Now it feels it’s the right time to share my story, now with everybody, ‘cause you a lot of people were thinking this in that, now you hear from the horse’s mouth.”
